Roanoke City honors the Grandfather
Mountain biking’s living legend is recognized...finally.
The City of Roanoke recently honored Dick "The Grandfather of Mountain Biking in the RoVa" Howard for his lifetime achievements in the sport.
Dick promoted the first mountain bike race in Virginia in the very early 80's and is generally recognized as the first mountain biker in the Roanoke Valley.
His early advocacy work in the Roanoke Calely resulted in the formation of the Carvins Cove Citizen's Committee which legitimized trail users in this gem of a recreation area.
In the late 1990's, Dick began lobbying bikers, equestrians and the City for a parking lot on Carvins Cove Road. In his honor the city named the parking lot "The Grandfather's Parking Area".
